RAYMONDCatherine Dean was awarded the Bob Dunaway Scholarship for 2024 at the closing reception of the 按人科同利 Fine Art and Graphic Design Student Exhibit on April 25, 2024, in Marie Hull Gallery, Raymond Campus.

This is an award reserved for a student who is willing to push boundaries, who exhibits growth as well as great potential and acts as a role model in the department, said LeeReyna Lopez Leyva, Fine and Performing Arts Department Chair and Art Instructor.

Dean will receive up to $500 in scholarship money. She also won Best In Show in the student exhibit for her painting, Morning Glory. The show and competition are open to first and second-year Fine Art and Graphic Art students who are currently enrolled. Dean was also the big winner at the 2024 Mississippi Community College Art Instructor Associations annual State Art Competition where she won Best of Show for her oil painting, Psycho Pomp.

It was hard to choose winners when there is so much strong work to choose from, Lopez Leyva said.

Bob Dunaway was the Hinds Art Department Chair from 1971-1986 and remained at Hinds until he retired in 1993 and was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus. His scholarship has been around for over 20 years.
